In my opinion, the demand for the Burberry trench has declined and that’s evident by their financial numbers they reported. Could this be because consumers are shifting away from loud patterns and opting in for a more quiet luxury look? Perhaps, but one thing we know for certain is the Burberry trench coat is the pinnacle of the brand.

Production is split between China and the UK

In 2006, when Burberry announced it was moving production from the UK to China, many people were outraged, what they failed ot understand was only certain pieces were being outsourced to China, while their traditional Trench Coat was still being created in the UK.

However, it made huge news back in 2006 and the message of the Trench Coat production staying in the UK was lost on most people. Also, do you really want to be trying to figure out which pieces are made where when purchasing a product? The answer is probably no. For me, that put a huge damper on the brand and the basic pieces such as the polo, half zips, etc the perception is the quality went down, so one would naturally assume the quality of the Trench Coat would go down too.

Is the Burberry Trench the introduction piece to the Burberry brand and this is why they keep the price of the trench coat so competitive? Perhaps, but you could argue the Chanel flap bag is the cornerstone of Chanel and it constantly increases it price. The first purchase people make at Burberry is a trench coat and in my opinion if you like the Trench Coat and the quality you’ll come back for other products, however, given what we talked about above, I think customers will be disappointed in other purchased given the production quality has gone done since only the trench and some core products are make in the UK now.

Secondary market the pricing is so low

Given the fact the Burberry Trench coat has been around since 1912, there are endless amounts for sale across the secondary market, flea markets, and thrift shops around the world.
