    Hello,

    Thank you for all the information you have provided. One question:

    I purchased a bag from Galeries Lafayette in Paris, and received the cash refund at the store. However, I was unable to scan the form at the Pablo terminal at the airport as I was getting late for my flight.

    I am back in my home country (India). How do I ensure my card doesn’t get charged for the VAT refund that I have already received in cash? Thank you.

  2. Megan Thoma says:

    Thank you so much Diane!!! I appreciate your prompt and everything you’ve shared! xoxo

  3. Dear Megan,

    Thank you for your message about the tax refund process in Paris!

    Great question regarding your two different refunds. It is very common to get the refund at different times. Each company processes the paperwork different and it can come very quickly or can take up to 3 months.

    Before I moved to Paris, I had the same question when I did my tax refund process.

    I hope that answers your question regarding the tax refund process in Paris! 🙂

  4. Hi Diane! Thank you so much for this post. I am curious….I had my forms filled out, stamped, and mailed them out at the airport on 5/22. What is strange, is I received a refund for only one of the three items I purchased. The one I received a refund on, was for Chanel shoes that I purchased and didn’t use a machine to expedite the process. The other two I bought at Galeries Lafayette and used their machine, and then mailed them out at the airport like the shoes….is it common to get a refund at different times? Thank you! 🙂

  6. Dear Gene,

    Thank you for your message in regards to the tax refund process at Galeries Lafyatte.

    Have you already left paris or are you at the airport currently? The Airport will have envelopes available for you if you lost yours. If you are already back in your home country and you haven’t submitted your tax refund back yet, please follow these steps:

    Within 6 months after the date of purchase of your goods, you must address a tax refund request to:

    Direction Générale des Douanes et Droits Indirects
    Fiscalité, transports et politiques fiscales communautaires (bureau F1)
    11, rue des Deux Communes
    93558 Montreuil
    France

    This request MUST be supported by the following documents:

    A copy of your passport;
    A copy of your travel ticket or your boarding pass;
    An “attestation de présentation des marchandises” issued by a French Consulate. In order to get this document you must go to the Consulate with the goods you bought, your passport and your plane ticket – OR –
    The Declaration you made for those goods when entering your country;
    A letter with exhaustive explanations of the reasons why you were not able to get your form stamped when leaving France;
    The Retail Export Form.

    I hope that answers your question regarding the tax refund process in Paris.

    Kind Regards,

  9. I am going through CDG in a couple weeks. Now that the LV store is open in the airport and is duty free, would you recommend shopping there or still in the city? Would the price be significantly different you think? If I shop in the duty free, that will eliminate me having to process the VAT refund right?

    1. Diane Coletta says:

      Dear Regina,

      Thank you for your message about the tax refund process in Paris.

      If you are looking for something specific I would recommend shopping in the store in the city. I only say this because the airport stores have a very limited quantity of what they have in the store. I haven’t been to the LV store at the airport before, but I have been to other higher end designer stores at the airport and they are small boutiques. The flagship store or another store in the city will most likely have what you’re looking for.

      You are correct – The airport pricing will already have the tax deducted from the price, meaning you wouldn’t have to process the VAT refund at the airport.

      I hope that answers your question about the tax refund process in Paris.

      Kind Regards,
      Diane

    Dear Khine,

    Thank you for your message about the tax back policy in Paris from Galeries Lafayette-

    Did you drop the paperwork in the mailbox? Did you scan it? The reason you are getting charged the amount is because something did indeed go wrong in the process. I’m not exactly sure where it went wrong in the process? Did you happen to take a photo or make a copy of all the forms? If you did you can use those forms and send it directly to Galeries Lafayette and contact them.

    I’m so sorry to hear the tax refund process did not go smoothly for you, sometimes it can be complicated.

    I hope that answers your question regarding the tax refund process in Paris from Galeries Lafayette.

  11. Dear Diane,

    I purchased a pair of Gucci sneakers at Galeries Lafayette on the 18th of April and left the Schengen area from the Florence airport on the 24th of April. How can I track the tax refund (via credit card) for my purchase at Galeries Lafayette? Is it through Global Blue or Premier? It’s not indicated in the form whether it’s Global Blue or Premier.

    Thanks in advance for your help!

    Kind regards,
    Maybelle

    1. Diane Coletta says:

      Dear Maybelle,

      Thank you for your message regarding the tax refund policy / process in Paris.

      The machine you would use for the tax refund process for galeries lafayette is the PABLO system. Did you use this system at the airport?

      For the future if you want to track using Premier you would use this link: https://premiertaxfree.com/track-my-refund

      Keep in mind it does take up to 3 months to receive the tax back on your credit card.

      I hope you better now understand the tax refund process in Galeries with Galeries Lafayette

  13. Hi Diane,

    I am going to Frankfurt after Paris and I will be leaving for home from Frankfurt. I bought something from La Fayette and received cash on the spot. I was advised to look for the Pablo scanner in Frankfurt Airport. Will there be such a scanner outside of Paris?

    Thank you.

    Regards
    Ling

    1. Diane Coletta says:

      Dear Ling,

      Thank you so much for your message regarding the tax refund process in Paris at Galeries Lafayette.

      There should be a Pablo scanner at the Frankfurt Airport I would double check before you arrive, if not see if you could use the global blue scanner instead.

      Every airport has the tax refund scanners.

      I hope that answers your question in understanding the tax refund process in Paris at Galeries Lafayette

  14. Selva Astudillo says:

    Dear Diane ,
    I purchased two longchamp bags at Galeries Lafayette on April 29th and made the tax refund process there and got the cash back immediately. However, I left from France but at the airport I totally forgot to look for the Pablo machines. Now I am back in the states and don’t know how the process is. I read on the information that Galeries Lafayette gave me that they could fine me for not scanning it. So I am very nervous about it. Hope you can help me with this.
    Thank you

    1. Dear Selva,

      Thank you for your question regarding the tax refund process in Paris. Did you already receive the refund from Galeries Lafayette in cash before you left? If you do not submit it and you received the tax back, they will automatically charge your credit card the amount you received back.

      If you simply forgot to submit the tax refund paperwork at the airport and did not collect a refund at Galeries Lafayette and got the forms you won’t be charged

      You can still submit it from the USA, please follow this process:

      Within 6 months after the date of purchase of your goods, you must address a tax refund request to:

      Direction Générale des Douanes et Droits Indirects
      Fiscalité, transports et politiques fiscales communautaires (bureau F1)
      11, rue des Deux Communes
      93558 Montreuil
      France

      This request MUST be supported by the following documents:

      A copy of your passport;
      A copy of your travel ticket or your boarding pass;
      An “attestation de présentation des marchandises” issued by a French Consulate. In order to get this document you must go to the Consulate with the goods you bought, your passport and your plane ticket – OR –
      The U.S. Customs or Canadian Customs declaration you made for those goods when entering your country;
      A letter with exhaustive explanations of the reasons why you were not able to get your form stamped when leaving France; AND
      The Retail Export Form.

      I hope that answer your question regarding the tax back refund process in Paris, France.

    Dear Diane,
    I made a purchase at Chanel in Galeries Lafayette on April 6 2019 and I left France on April 7 2019. I scanned the tax form at the airport and it was accepted. Afterwards, I dropped off the scanned form in the Airport drop mail box. but i haven’t got anything showing my refund is being processed. Could you please tell me a way to track my refund.? I’m concerned as I also made purchases which global blue where used and within 2 weeks after leaving Paris I received my refunds except from the Gallerias Lafayette Chanel.
    Thank you very much for you kind consideration.

    1. Dear Phuong,

      Thank you for your message regarding the tax refund process in Paris, France.

      The tax refund process can take up to 3 months, especially during the busy season sometimes things get processed slower.

      Sometimes the forms get processed very quickly like in your case, and other times it takes longer.

      I hope that answers your question regarding the tax refund process in Paris, France.

  16. Dear Diane,
    I made a purchase at Fendi in Galeries Lafayette on March 16th and I left France on March 21st 2019. I scanned the tax form at the airport and it declined, therefore I had to take it to customs and he asked to see the bag and I showed it to him ( I was wearing it) he scanned the form. Afterwards, I dropped off the scanned form in the Airport drop box. but i havent got any refund back to my card. Can you please tell me a way to track my refund.? Im concerned as I also made purchases elsewhere where global blue and premier tax where used and within 1-2 weeks after leaving Paris I received my refunds except from the Gallerias Lafayette Purchases.
    Thank you.

    1. Dear Veronica,

      The tax refund process in Paris can be quite confusing. When the refund was declined it adds extra time to the refund process. This is why I always tell everyone it could take up to 3 months. (I’ve even had things take a little longer since I came during the busy season) If you’re anything like me, I hate waiting for my refund, but definitely be patient and it will happen.

      hope that helps and provides you with a little more information on the tax refund policy in France!

      Kind Regards,
      Diane

  18. Dear Diane,
    I bought a necklace in lafayee and leave EU from Frankfort , Germany, I get stamp but could not find a mailbox, so I still bring the receipt back to china.
    what should I do?
    thank you!

    1. Dear Kang,

      Thank you for your message regarding understanding the tax back process in Paris. You should bring it back to China, and then find out where you mail it to in China. Each country will have a different location to mail it to.

      I hope that helps.

      Best,
      Diane

  19. Dear Diane,
    If i process the tax refund in Galeries Lafayette and opt for refund in cash on the spot, do i still need to stamp the form in my last exit point from EU? I will leave EU from Brussels. Can i drop the form there or i need to mail it by myself?
    Thanks for posting this valuable info.

    1. Dear Ray,

      Great question, if you opt in for the refund in cash they will provide it to you immediately, then you will still need to drop it off at the airport before you leave the EU. There should be a stand / booth at the Brussels airports where you will scan the paper and then drop it in the box. I would recommend googling the exact location of where it’s located in the airport before you arrive.

      I hope that helps!
      Kind Regards,
      Diane
