    Hi.
Bought shoes at galeria lafayette. Followed the process for tax refund at the store. I exited eu at rome fco airport. I had my papers stamped and the guy at the window said i should mail my envelope when i get back from the Philippines. Is this the real process? What must i do?
    Thanks!

    1. Diane Coletta says:

      Dear Ruby,

Thank you for your message about the tax refund policy in Paris from Galeries Lafayette!

Did they have a mailbox of somewhere you could drop them at the airport? Did you get a green check mark when you scanned the envelope? If you did then you don’t have to mail them back. If you did not, you will be able to mail the paperwork back from the Philippines as well.

Within 6 months after the date of purchase of your goods, you must address a tax refund request to:

Direction Générale des Douanes et Droits Indirects
Fiscalité, transports et politiques fiscales communautaires (bureau F1)
      11, rue des Deux Communes

  2. Hi,
I purchased Gucci bag at Galleries Lafayette (Paris) last October, 12, 2018. Galleries tax section, gave me the tax form with all the details and my signature, and they told me that the form needs to be scanned in the CDG airport and drop it in the box. When I was in CDG airport on the tax refund section, I had the form scanned, the staff assisted me to do the scanning told me that no need to drop the form as scanning is sufficient. But until now I still haven’t received the credit of refund to my credit card. I also purchased LV items in the Louis Vuitton Champs Elysee store but within few days the credit for tax refund already shown in my credit card. So is it normal that it really has delay in the refund for Gallleries? Is it okey that I didn’t drop the form but scanning is enough as the form is still with me here back home?

    Thanks in advance for reply.

    1. Dear Ybur,

Great question! I understand how it can be frustrating not receiving your tax back immediately, especially considering you already received your tax back from Louis Vuitton but the tax refund can take up to 3 months. The reason it can take that long is because during the busy season there are many more tax refund forms being submitted. If the staff told you you didn’t need to drop the form into the mail box that means it was able to be scanned digitally. Hope that answers your question!

      Kind Regards,

  3. Hi Diane,

My friend bought the Monclear from galeries Lafayette, paris and did the tax refund there. She received cash back already. She had only one documentaion from kiosk, no envelope. She will leave at Frankfurt, the last EU country today. She is very nervous where tax form have to be sent after stamping from airport customs. Dose she need to mail this back? And to what address? Or is there mail box for this tax form? Because there is not company name of tax refund in her tax form. So we don’t know which mail box is for lafayette. Very urgently situation. please reply if you see this message as soon as possible

    1. Hello Kini,

Thank you for your question. There should be a place for your friend to drop it off in a box at the Frankford airport. I would recommend your friend arrives early to located the tax back, and she can ask questions.

Please make sure you ask someone when you are there so they can drop the box in the correct mail box.

      Hope that helps.

  5. KHINE THET MON says:

    Dear Diane,
I bought 2 Chanel bags and 1 Burberry bag at Galleries Lafayette on 2 Sep 2018 and got a VAT refund at departmental store in cash amount £844.31. My trip was ended in London on 9 Sep 2018 and gave back my Tax refund slip at UK custom and showed all my bags there. They said the process is done and will send the paper back to Paris.
Now, same VAT refund amount was deducted from my debit card,
Why was this happening? I don’t ever expect of this kind of situation and thought something went wrong.
    Kindly advise.

    1. Diane Coletta says:

      Dear Khine,

Thank you for your message about the tax back policy in Paris from Galeries Lafayette-

Did you drop the paperwork in the mailbox? Did you scan it? The reason you are getting charged the amount is because something did indeed go wrong in the process. I’m not exactly sure where it went wrong in the process? Did you happen to take a photo or make a copy of all the forms? If you did you can use those forms and send it directly to Galeries Lafayette and contact them.

I’m so sorry to hear the tax refund process did not go smoothly for you, sometimes it can be complicated.

  6. Hi Diane,

I bought the Chanel Purse from Galeries Lafayette and received the forms there. I went to the 1st floor and prepared the document in the Kiosk and then at the Airport where it seemed fine. The purse was purchased on September 8th and we left and did the process at the airport on September 9th. I haven’t received the refund on my credit card yet. Do you have any suggestions?

    Thank you,

  7. Patrick Wong says:

    Bonjour Diane

I am terribly sorry to trouble you but I have a similar situation to the others except I have gotten the stamp at customs and approved. I also completed all the details on the Pablo kiosk upstairs of the department store.

Essentially I opted for the credit card reimbursement and took my forms to the airport. Unfortunately I did not realise I had to send it back via mail so I threw away the envelope with all the details. I still have all the receipts and forms but just not the envelope with the address.

I was hoping you could help me with the correct mail address as I have already got everything approved but just need to send it back to Galeries Lafayette so they can process the tax return.

I saw the mailing address you replied to others but it looks like when you haven’t completed any steps and just have the receipts?

If you could help it would be great as I have tried to look for a number to call at Galeries Lafayette but there is none and they have not replied to my email and it has been a long time.

    Thanks and much appreciated.

    1. Diane Coletta says:

      Dear Patrick,

Thank you for your message about the tax refund policy in Paris from Galeries Lafayette-

The good news is if your paperwork got approved you don’t have to deposit it in the mailbox at the airport. You only have to deposit the tax refund forms if it does not get approved.

Meaning you don’t have to mail back any of the tax refund paperwork to Galeries Lafayette!

I hope that answers your question regarding the tax refund process / service in Paris at Galeries Lafayette.

  8. Hello ,

I have problem, I bought wallet from galeries Lafayette and I did the tax refund there. I received cash back after three days I went to CDG airport and forget to scan the form, and after 3 montes from now they don’t take the tax from my account,,,

what shell i do? send the form by mail?

    1. Diane Coletta says:

      Dear Zeiad,

Thank you for your message about the tax refund policy in Paris from Galeries Lafayette!

You would have to mail the tax form back from your home country. I’m not sure where exactly you are located but you have the option to mail the tax refund form back at several locations.

After 3 months they will add a charge to your credit card of the money you received back so it is very important that you mail in the tax refund form back.

Here is a little more information on that process:
Within 6 months after the date of purchase of your goods, you must address a tax refund request to:

Direction Générale des Douanes et Droits Indirects
Fiscalité, transports et politiques fiscales communautaires (bureau F1)
      11, rue des Deux Communes
      93558 Montreuil
      France

This request MUST be supported by the following documents:

      – A copy of your passport;
      – A copy of your travel ticket or your boarding pass;
      – An “attestation de présentation des marchandises” issued by a French Consulate. In order to get this document you must go to the Consulate with the goods you bought, your passport and your plane ticket – OR –
      – The U.S. Customs or Canadian Customs declaration you made for those goods when entering your country;
      – A letter with explanations of the reasons why you were not able to get your form stamped when leaving France
      – The Retail Export Form.

If your application is adjudicated as justified, you will be mailed an endorsed “customer” copy of the Retail Export Form. The Customs will mail the other copy to the store, which will, in turn, refund you the VAT.

I hope that answers your question regarding the tax refund process in Paris from Galeries Lafayette.

  9. Hi Diane,

I had purchased my item and got a refund the same day as a cashback. I then got a customs stamp in Italy and put it in a mailbox before I departed.

However now I have received a charge from Galeries Lafayette. Do you know who to contact regarding this charge – I had already emailed Premier TaxFree but they said the Galeries Lafayette form is not Premier TaxFree.

I am tempted to dispute this on my credit card but just seeing if I can get it clarified before I do.

    Thanks!
    Domi

    1. Diane Coeltta says:

      Dear Domi,

Thank you for your message about the tax refund policy in Paris from Galeries Lafayette!

I’m sorry to hear about your issue regarding the tax refund process in Paris, do you know if it got approved before you put it in the mailbox? Unfortunately, I’m not 100% familiar with how the mailboxes look and the flow in Italy. You should however, not be receiving a charge on your credit card if you deposited it in the mailbox. Did you take a photo of your tax refund receipt? I advise you contact galeries lafayette to try to get this resolved. I’m sorry again to hear this happened, I know how frustrating this could be. The tax refund policy in Europe is quite complicated.

I hope that answers your question regarding the tax refund process in Paris from Galeries Lafayette.

      1. Hi Diane,

I had the same issue. Unfortunately GL is not helping at all. Instead, they claimed that tourist should not be enjoying such “special offer” for tax refund. I had shop so much in EU and it looks like only GL is giving such dispute and it seems norm to most tourists.

I hope to resolve this soon too with GL. I have contacted EU tax and GL should be able to return the charges from my credit card however, according to GL they must have the original copy which is impossible for me to produce since it has been sent out long ago.

I hope you have took an image of your tax form and seek for other relevant help regarding this.

        Regards,

  10. Hi Diane,

I bought the Chanel wallet from galeries Lafayette and did the tax refund there. I received cash back already. But the last EU country I left was Spain. I had the tax form stamped from the Barcelona airport customs. Do I need to mail this back? And to what address? I lost my envelope. Thank you.

    1. Dear Vicki,

Did you drop your envelope into the box when you were at the airport? If not I’ve outlined the process below

Within 6 months after the date of purchase of your goods, you must address a tax refund request to:

Direction Générale des Douanes et Droits Indirects

  12. Hi Diane,

I bought a wallet at Galeries Lafayette and I processed my tax form at the pablo kiosk at CDG but I just realized that I forgot to send the paper in the mailbox at the airport. Do you think I should just mail it back to France from the U.S.?

    1. Diane Coletta says:

      Dear Kristine,

Thank you for your message about the tax refund policy in Paris from Galeries Lafayette!

Did you receive a green check mark when you scanned the documents? If you received a green check mark when you scanned the documents you didn’t have to drop them into the mailbox.

If you did not receive the green check mark then you had to drop them in the mailbox at the airport in order to receive your tax back from Paris.

However, you always have the option to mail the forms as well even though you are back in America.

I hope that answers your question regarding the tax refund process in Paris from Galeries Lafayette.

  13. Bonjour Diane,

I bought something from Chanel Galeries Lafayette Haussmann on 15 June 2018.

I went to the your tax refund counter to collect the summary. of tax refund Then I went to CDG airport and had it stamped after the self check kiosk denied approval. Then I dropped it in the box . I have not received the tax refund.. I tried to track through Globalblue & Premier tax free but to no avail. I think my refund form said something like Pablo.

    Can you advise me? Thanks

    1. Bonjour Wendy,

Great question, when you went through the process did anyone manually approve it? Also, if it said Pablo on the form did you take it to the Pablo Kioski?

You are still under the 3 month window from when you processed it, sometimes it takes longer especially in the summer due to all the tourist coming to Paris.

      Kind Regards,
      Diane

      1. I got the same problem as Wendy too and I have done all the procedure that she mentions, when the self check Pablo kiosk denied approval one of my summary tax i went to the counter for assistant for manually approval and then drop it the box.
It’s been 2 months and half and I wander is there any way that I could track the status? Which company that Galeries Lafayette using, Global blue or premier Tax? I try premier tax but no answer yet. Thanks

  14. Hello Diane,

It has been about 5 weeks or so that I came back from London. As I went to Paris and shop in Galaries Lafayette, I did a tax refund at London airport. As currently now is using the machine to process and to receive the documents, do I still have to mail the receipt to global blue? My receipt have to no stamp,,, Like my Printemps and Selfridges receipt both have stamp… I also remember that I have a customer copy of the tax refund form from Galaries Lafayette but I am unable to track it at Global Blues… Does this mean that I have to mail the receipt to global blue now or so? Will they give any copy of the tax refund form(Customer copy)?

    1. Hello GH,

When you were at the airport, did you drop the paperwork into the box to be processed or did you take it with you?

      Thanks!
      Diane

  15. Is there max amount that i can get back in VAT.. like im getting 3 LV purses.. what would be the best way going back to US.

also is there a limit on how many handbags you can buy like in UK (3 bags in 6 months)?

    1. Hello Tune,

Thank you for the message. No there isn’t an amount like there is in the UK. However, some high end luxury stores will limit how many bags they sell you, for example I believe Hermes limits it to 2 a year with the same passport. Also, keep in mind the more items you have the more likely it is you will get searched when you go through customs so just make sure you have all the information / products readily available!

      Have fun shopping!
      Diane

  16. Hello Diane,

thanks so much for your blogpost!
I still have some questions after reading your comments/replies.

I processed the paperwork at Galeries Lafeyette’s self service kiosks, and had the VAT stamp at an austrian airport, however was told they cannot process the refund as its not Global Blue. Do I post it back to the address you mentioned in your reply to Theresa? I also don’t have my boarding pass anymore. Also don’t I also need to post my receipt?

    Thank you!

    1. Hello Fiona,

Great question. Yes please follow the information I provided Theresa. If you don’t have your boarding pass please check with the airline. Many times you are able to request a receipt your boarding pass, or still print it off online. Yes, please include your receipt as well.

Also, it’s important to mention for others, that sometimes you have to check with the Premier tax free section instead of Global Blue (Depends on where you filed the taxes)

      Kind Regards,
      Diane

  17. Hi, I am going to another EU country after France before returning home to the US. After I do my VAT refund process at Galeries Lafayette, where do I get the customs stamp (at Orly airport in France or the next country before returning home)?

    Thanks!

    1. Hello Michelle,

Thank you for your message. You will get the customs stamp at the next country before you go home.

The custom stamp is provided when you scan your documents at the VAT refund machine at the airport 🙂

Let me know if you have any other questions.

      Diane

  18. Hi Diane,

What if I went to visit another EU country (Greece) after shopping in Paris before returning home (the US)? Do I still follow your steps – get VAT refund at Galeries Lafayette and then mail the form at Orly airport? Or do I have to do my VAT refund in Greece?

    Thanks!

    1. Hello Michelle,

      Thank you for your message.

You only file your VAT refund back when you leave the EU (Schengen Area). So if you go straight from Paris to Greece then you would file in Greece. However, if you decided to do the cash back option as oppose to waiting for the credit on your credit card, you would do that immediately and get the cash back instantly, then you would drop the form off in Greece.

Make sure you get there plenty of time in advance to locate the VAT refund machines, typically they are by the departures.

Hope that helps, safe travels, and Happy Shopping! 🙂
      Diane

      1. Hi Diane, thank you for your informative and helpful article.

Further to Michelle’s question about visiting another country after shopping in Paris, I understand from your reply that we have to drop our forms at the airport (i.e. in the mailing box) after receiving the VAT refund in cash via Galeries Lafayette’s self-svc machines.

Just wanted to clarify there’s no need to get any further stamping or validation at the airport in Greece before mailing? You mentioned to locate VAT refund machines at the airport – does this involve more scanning?

Also heard that the goods must be sighted before I leave the EU. Appreciate your reply and help. Thanks a lot!

        1. Dear Tess,

Thank you for your question about the tax refund process in Paris!

Great question, you will need to drop the forms off in the box before Airport Security. I would recommend that you double check in Greece to see if anything needs to be scanned as I’m not 100% familiar if they require an extra scanning (better safe than sorry).

Yes, please have any goods that you declare for the VAT tax refund with you at all times. It is unlikely but possible that they could ask to be seen.

I hope that answers your question on the tax refund policy in Paris!

          Thanks,
          Diane

Hey, I went to the airport and went to the global blue for VAT, she stamped it, and she told me to drop it off the mail box.
This was June 15th of 2018, and i still haven’t received any VAT refund back onto my credit card.
WHO AND HOW do I get ahold of someone for this.
Any number to contact. I’m from the US.

    1. Hello Alejandro,

Typically the VAT tax can take up to 3 months.

To check the status of the your refund go to this site to track your refund

      https://secure.globalblue.com/tax-free-shopping/refund-tracker

( or if you used Premier Tax Free https://premiertaxfree.com/track-my-refund)

If after 3 months has passed I would first contact your credit card company. In addition Some of the larger shops process their own VAT refunds, in which case the payment would be from the shop. I would suggest you follow-up with the shop.

Lastly here is the VAT Phone number you can call: +44 2920 501 261

      Hope that helps!

I forgot to register my VAT refund at the airport , I am now back in Canada what do I do?

    1. Dear Theresa,

Yes you can still receive your VAT refund tax. It’s a little longer of a process, but I’ve outlined it below for you

Within 6 months after the date of purchase of your goods, you must address a tax refund request to:

Direction Générale des Douanes et Droits Indirects
Fiscalité, transports et politiques fiscales communautaires (bureau F1)
      11, rue des Deux Communes

This request MUST be supported by the following documents:

      – A copy of your passport;
      – A copy of your travel ticket or your boarding pass;
      – An “attestation de présentation des marchandises” issued by a French Consulate. In order to get this document you must go to the Consulate with the goods you bought, your passport and your plane ticket – OR –
      – The U.S. Customs or Canadian Customs declaration you made for those goods when entering your country;

      Hope that helps!
