Historically the 4 top brands that hold are Hermes, Chanel, Goyard, and Louis Vuitton. If you are wanting to splurge on a designer handbag, but on the fence about the brands to purchase, then I definitely recommend sticking to a brand that offers high resale values. It’s not uncommon for one to outgrow a bag or change their style over time, so I always tell people investing in high quality bags is the way to go. I get that trendy or novelty bags are fun and super cute, but not all of them overtime hold their value as well as the classics. Top brands such a Hermes does a great job controlling the supply, and not selling bags to everyone. I’ve written several articles specifically about Hermes explaining the buying process and if I think the Hermes Birkin is worth the price.
The second main reason why bags have a higher resell value than retail price is because of the rate some bags increase in Price. Chanel increased prices in 2020 by 20%, and have shown no signs of slowing down in the price increase since. With that being said, if you bought a classic Chanel Caviar bag back before the major price increases, then you could sell your bag for a profit.
3 ways to ensure your bag has a high resell value
You maybe be wondering, what are some ways to ensure my bag gets the highest resale value if I go to sell it. As someone who has bought and sold many preloved items over the years, there are 3 main things that I recommend you do in order to ensure your bag receives the highest resale value possible.
- Store your bag in a good environment and use the dust bag. I know it’s super tempting to put your bags on display in your closet, you always see those incredible instagram photos of handbag closest and you may be tempted to do so, but trust me when I tell you that they should be stores in their dust bags to protect the bag.
- Purchase Neutral Color bags. The bags with the highest resale value are the ones with neutral colors.
- Take Care of your bag. When I say take care of your bag, I’m not saying don’t use your bag, but what I am saying is that when you use it, handle it with care. Try to eliminate wearing it during a rainstorm, or in any condition that could damage the leather. It’s very important to take care of your investment handbags well all handbags for that matter. They will last longer and you will receive a higher resale value if you should go to sell it.
